Castle Lake
Molybdenum (Mo) is present at low levels (2-3 nM) in Castle Lake in northern California. Previous work by Charles Goldman (UC Davis) and Richard Axler (Natural Resources Research Institute) showed that low Mo limits both photosynthesis and nitrate assimilation in this lake. I am studying the influence of ammonium on Mo limitation of nitrate uptake in Castle Lake (Glass et al., in prep). I am also completing geochemical characterization of Mo in Castle Lake sediments, sediment porewaters, soils, soil porewaters and bedrock with collaborators Alan Heyvaert (Desert Research Institute), Anthony Chappaz (UC Riverside) and Brooke Eustis (U Nevada Reno). I thank the staff of the Castle Lake Limnology Research Station for support of these projects.
